St. Francis of Assisi died in 1226 and two years later, Franciscan Friars arrived in Ireland making their first foundation in Cork. Franciscan men and women have been part of the Irish cultural landscape for centuries, accompanying people in good times and bad. There is a fascinating synergy between the Celtic and Franciscan spiritualties – both have a deep reverence for creation and for the beauty of the world.
